What a business owner should know about finance

The short answer: enough not to depend on someone else's opinion. Five things about money without which the business runs you, not the other way around.

Most owners don't want to dive into finance. It seems boring and complicated: «let the accountant, the CFO, someone else handle it». But business is money. And if the owner doesn't understand how it works, they are not running the business. You need to know only a little — but the critical little.

1. Profit ≠ revenue

Revenue is what passes through the company. Profit is what's left after all expenses. If you don't track real profit, you can «grow» your turnover for a very long time while personally earning nothing.

2. Cash ≠ profit

The opposite also happens: the reports say the business is profitable, but there's no money in the account. Why? Because the cash is frozen in inventory, debts and receivables. Managing cash is a separate skill that demands attention.

3. Control points

Finance is not a set of numbers at the end of the month. If you understand the key metrics, problems are visible in advance. A cash gap, for example, can be predicted months before it happens.

4. How to measure efficiency

Some projects look successful but drag the business down. Some lines of business bring more headache than money. And it's far from obvious on the surface — you need to look at the numbers for each line separately.

5. What drives profit, and how

Prices? Discounts? Cost per lead? Once the owner starts to see where the key levers are, managing the processes becomes easier.

Why all this matters

  • Make decisions based on real data, not emotions.
  • Not depend on employees who can leave and take all the order with them.
  • Know exactly what is happening to the business instead of «feeling that something is off».
  • And as a result — earn more, predictably.

Business is numbers. And if the owner doesn't understand them, the business runs the owner, not the other way around.
